Kristen Steward made history in 2015 when she was nominated for the César Awards as the first American Actress to be in this role for 30 years. The most outstanding thing about this success was the fact that she actually won the Award thanks to her role in the movie ‘Clouds of Sils Maria’ from the director and writer Olivier Assayas. The César’s are the equivalent of the Oscars in France.
The Start of the Twilight saga received the award for the Best Supporting Actress in a ceremony that was held at the Chatelet Theater in Paris by her outstanding role as Valentina, a young assistant of the actress Maria Sanders, incarnated by Juliette Binoche in the movie ‘Clouds of Sils Maria’ released on 2014.
This doesn’t stop being a scandalous happening and maybe something unexpected for an actress that wasn’t often associated as the best or most talented of Hollywood assets.
A big part of all those prejudices around Kristen Stewart and her attributes as an actress come from the Twilight saga, a phenomenon immensely popular that won a big fan base around the world and at the same a big hater base, making her a loved actress and a hated one even more. Even when she jumped to the stardom with her commercially successful role in Twilight, the actress has been acting in great and independent movies like the one she won the César Award from.
Acting as the unbearable Bella Swan in Twilight, among other details about her life, left the public image of Stewart in an awkward and not so privileged position, but the actress didn’t let this to interfere with her career, and this award is one sign that she’s not only a teen actress but much more than that.
Receiving the Award
When the actress was at the award ceremony, she didn’t even know when she was appointed as the winner of the César Award for the best Supporting Actress because she had felt asleep after 4 hours of not understanding anything in the ceremony when the earplug of the translator she was wearing wasn’t working anymore.
When receiving the award, Stewart thanked Binoche and said that she was honored to work alongside such a big and talented actress like Juliette.
‘You introduced me into a universe that was absolutely extraordinary for an American actress like me, you are one of my preferred people in the world’, said the actress to Binoche, extremely excited about the award.
Stewart said that the ceremony was really long and didn’t have commercial breaks so she couldn’t stand up and go to the bathroom or take a rest from the ceremony. Also, her translator earplug broke down in a moment and she couldn’t understand what the ceremony was about anymore, after 4 hours she just entered into a meditation state.
When she was announced as the winner of the Award, Binoche screamed at her when she was in an almost-slept state. She was so nervous that could hardly hold the award in her hands. She said ‘I was so nervous, it was an absolutely important moment and it was funny because I was actually joking with my publicist about it – that I was really nervous and he told me that the worst that could happen was being announced as the winner and have to get up there and talk to the whole country’, the actress said, ‘I was completely atrophied, my hands didn’t respond and I could hardly speak a word.’ – ‘It was truly embarrassing for me’.
However, the actress could win the first César and was the surprise of the day with her award; something that not many people were expecting.
